Chris Hodgson leaping toward two victories at Teesside Autodrome
With just one week between the first and second rounds of the British Supermoto Championship there was hardly a minute for the riders to catch their breath and prepare themselves. Frantic bike preparations, late night garage work was the order of the day before the teams headed North East to Teesside Autodrome on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd May.
Rather different conditions greeted competitors compared to round one, with a cool 10 degrees, thankfully the inclement weather predicted did not come to fruition resulting in dry conditions across the weekend.
The ACU British Supermoto Championship commenced with Superpole which would see the top five qualifiers battle it out to claim the rights for the front. After some heroic on the edge riding it would be Todd on his Worthington Property Developments Honda who would secure the number one spot on the grid just 0.600 of a second from Hodgson on the Automotive Solutions Husqvarna.
Race one and Hodgson and Bannon (DCR Husqvarna) broke away and set the early pace and this remained the case until the chequered flag, with the finish seeing Hodgson, Bannon and Jamie Duncan (Trevor Pope KTM) in third position.
Race two and although Hodson took the lead, a mistake on the off road section allowed Scott Murray to capitalise on this, along with Todd and Bannon and from that moment on the final three positions would be secured until the conclusion of the race.
As the Teesside sky turned grey riders rolled out for the last race of the day which would see a reverse grid of the top eight finishers fron race two. This provided Richard Sharpe (Bathmate Husqvarna) with the opportunity to have a clear view of the first corner and as the lights extinguished he made the most of his front row and grabbed the holeshot. However, within seconds he was overwhelmed by the chasing pack and four abreast action took the riders around the first few tight bends. But Hodgson was in a fired-up mood to ensure he pushed hard and with Jay Smith within inches of his back wheel there was no room for error as the HGR Honda rider would for sure take any opportunity to take the lead. As a result of Hodgsons tenacity and will to win the result would see him cross the line again in first position to record a two out of three victory at round two.
